Go for 90! In honour of Nelson Mandela's 90th year, ask your students to organize a fundraiser around the number 90. The goal is to raise an amount representing 90 items which Canadian children might take for granted, but which are hard come by for children in South Africa.
E.g. 90 pencils for 9$!
Have students deliver their own stories about Nelson Mandela, South Africa and other social justice issues to their peers in other classes;
Have students conduct their own research into Nelson Mandela’s life;
Open-ended writing activities including classroom or school presentations containing pictures of Robben Island, images of Nelson Mandela, and South Africa;
Student T-Shirt designs and face painting;
Spoken word poetry performances;
Writing and art contests or have a door decorating contest within your school;
“Hands Up” artwork and displays that demonstrate solidarity and youth awareness of poverty, children affected by AIDS/HIV and other lessons;
School Assemblies with presentations, music, readings, plays and skits performed by students;
Creation of a murals;
Scavenger hunt and radio shows;
Special African music in the morning, special quotes by Nelson Mandela each day on morning announcements, video of Mandela’s life shown every day at lunch in cafeteria;
Have your school perform a “Long Walk for Freedom” walkathon around school!
